Lunchtime Talk | author Tony Coen
Tony's book is a comprehensive guide to the history of the rivercraft and coastal traders operating out of Hobart from the boom years of the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, through the slow decline after World War II to the current rebirth. The people and companies that ran the shipping and ferry services are brought to life in this fascinating insight into the working port of Hobart.
Tony took an interest in shipping and railways at an early age, and remembers travelling onboard Bellerive ferry SS Derwent prior to its conversion to diesel power. He was employed in the late 70s by O'May Ferry and Charter Services as a deckhand, but soon gained his Skipper's certificate and Marine Motor Engine Driver's ticket.
Tony's 40+ years of research into the history of local shipping around Tasmania, particularly on the River Derwent, has enabled him to write his extensive book, covering the history of over 150 mechanically-powered vessels of all sizes.
