Lunchtime Talks: Dr Will Hobbs, oceanographer & meteorologist

Event Dates
Event/Exhibition location
Royal Society Room, TMAG, 12:00pm

Join us for the latest in our Lunchtime Talks series, where we'll hear from Dr Will Hobbs, who will talk us through what recent winters are telling us about Antarctica’s future.

For almost four decades, Antarctic sea ice seemed to be strangely unaffected by climate change. That has changed drastically in the last decade though, with back-to-back record low summer sea ice cover. More alarming for experts though has been the reduction in winter ice cover since 2023.

Dr Will Hobbs is an oceanographer and meteorologist who has researched Antarctic sea ice for 20 years. In this talk he will explain what sea ice is, why it matters to the rest of us, and why Antarctic experts are so spooked by the last few years.
