Lunchtime Talk | Rex Cox: Hobart in time of war

Event Dates
Event/Exhibition location
Royal Society Room, TMAG, 12:00pm

Join us on Tuesday 2 June for a Lunchtime Talk with Rex Cox, exploring Hobart’s waterfront during the Boer War, the Great War and World War II.

Drawing on a remarkable collection of photographs, Rex will share port scenes, visiting ships and rare wartime images, including some taken between 1939 and 1945 when photography around the wharves was officially prohibited. These photographs reveal a Hobart shaped by wartime restrictions, troopship visits, heightened security and the quiet determination of local ship enthusiasts who found ways to document history as it unfolded.

From grey-painted merchant ships and troop liners in the Derwent, to unofficial photographs taken from office windows, ferries and carefully chosen vantage points, this talk offers a fascinating glimpse into Hobart’s port in times of conflict.

The session will conclude with time for questions.

Tuesday 2 June, 12pm. Free to attend. Bookings essential.

Our Lunchtime Talks series is supported by Arts Tasmania.
