Education
Program:
The Maritime Museum
of Tasmania offers a range of excursion options to schools,
all of which can be tailored to meet your particular requirements.
Our education
program is flexible and options can be discussed with our
co-ordinator of maritime history, Peta Knott. The program can
include museum tours, and is offered in collaboration with
Tasmanian Museum and Art Gallery.
Whether the focus
is on shipping or trade, shipwrecks or pirates, whaling or navigation,
you will find something of interest here. The present and the
past are brought together to give an appreciation of what we
have now and what has gone before; the program is not just about
ships, but also about the environment and the people involved.
Activities currently
available in the education room are organised under the following
themes:
Knowledge Hunt and Web Quest:
The Last Lighthouse Keeper Knowledge Hunt
and Web Quest are based on
Tasmanian lighthouses. Developed by the Maritime Museum's
former Education Officer, the Knowledge Hunt may be used as an
introduction to the Web Quest. Each is linked a Teacher
Plan.
Concept Builder:
Code-mmunication is a concept
builder that develops an understanding of the links between
Morse Code and more modern forms of communication, especially
digital and SMS. This activity was produced by the Maritime Museum's
Education Officer.
The Pirate
Club:
Children
who have visited the Museum with their class are invited to contribute
art, poetry, riddles etc to our Pirate
Club page. Here, they will also find links to other fun
sites on the Internet that are maritime related.
Maritime Museum Tours, Walks and Activities:
Costs are based on
a standard $60 per class or $3 per student, negotiable in special
